Borage oil, derived from the seeds of the borage (Borago officinalis) plant, contains a significant amount of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an important omega-6 fatty acid. The body converts GLA to a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) that helps balance the body’s response to inflammation. Some types of omega-6 are too high in most diets, while others, including GLA, are too low. Standard Western diets typically contain adequate amounts of linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils such as corn and safflower. However, the body's ability to convert linoleic acid to its active GLA form can be reduced by various factors, including consumption of hydrogenated oils or trans fats, certain diseases, and inadequate intake of some nutrients including vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, and B vitamins. Borage oil can be a useful dietary agent to help offset the proinflammatory effects of arachidonic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that is too high in most diets. Common dietary sources of arachidonic acid include red meat, eggs, and other foods containing saturated fats. Borage seed oil is the richest known source of GLA, typically containing about 20% GLA, and can be used to help reestablish a healthier omega-6 fatty acid balance. Borage oil provides a higher ratio of GLA compared to the amount of linoleic acid than evening primrose oil and similar plant oils. The borage oil used in this product is unrefined and cold-pressed without use of hexane or other solvents. Vitamin E, an antioxidant, is added to maintain freshness. Suggested Use: 1 to 2 softgels daily. This product was made in a GMP and ISO 9001:2000 registered facility.
